The Model of Bensan
These pictures were found in the Benenden Museum and date from around 1915. They show two patients proudly displaying their hand-crafted model of the National Sanatorium at Benenden in which they were staying.
In 1912, the average length of stay for a patient at Benenden was 112 days. Keeping the mind occupied during this long stay was an important part of the treatment regime and patients were encouraged to continue existing hobbies or start new ones.
This amazing piece of art must have taken many hours of work.
Such an impressive project even today it would be considered so. Amazing to see such endeavors and strong sense of community. What a great achievement that must have been for them.
