Surgery Leads the Way

Opening Ceremony

The Lady Soames opens another large surgical wing at Benenden Hospital on 6 May 1981. Sir Winston Churchill’s daughter spent sometime at the hospital talking to staff and patients before formally opening a new surgical ward and theatre facility.

Queens Ward to Garland Suite

This new building, known as Queens was further evidence of the success of the Sociey and the Hospital. The unit had four bays of 6 beds with a single room for intensive care, as well as a kitchen and dining area with a lounge. This ward has since been developed into single en-suite rooms and now known as Garland Suite.

New Theatres to State of the Art Theatres

The new Queens unit also provided two new modern theatres with all the supporting facilities. At the time, these offered very modern equipment to support the continued growth of surgical services in the 1980s. Services have continued to grow year on year and we have just moved into a new state of the art theatre suite as part of our new development.
